J.E.E.P. ~ Jaltemba Equine Education Project
For those of you living in the area or just visiting and are interested in volunteering at the Hilltop Refugio ... our first priority is to provide a happy, healthy home for the animals !! We average about 30 some dogs and 20 some cats and 10 some horses. Keeping the place clean is a priority for us and it helps reduce the risk of infection ... and helps keep everyone happy and healthy!
With the exception of Saturday Morning Open House where all the focus is on the dogs and visitors ... from Monday thru Friday our volunteer work focuses on cleaning up after the animals, washing bowls, cleaning their water buckets, getting them fresh water, etc.. The list goes on, but someone will be there to guide you on what needs to be done.
After morning clean up you are more than welcome to help work with our rescues! They are always in need of learning to walk on a leash which will make them a much more adoptable pet. You have to remember that they usually come from a bad situation with no love.
We have created a closed Facebook Group called ''Hilltop Refugio Volunteers (J.E.E.P.) www.facebook.com/groups/258843208154780 This group is ONLY for those that are physically here or coming soon to the area, the organizing of volunteers and a place to share information of the current needs, orientation for volunteering, cleaning schedules, dog walking/training schedules, and Spay/Neuter Clinic organizing. Some of this information will be shared on our main FB Page and Group, but the overall goal is to keep the main page uncluttered and focused on the animals, adoptions and activities.
Help us find homes for a dog with someone near you! If the new owner is willing to pay for the flight and dog crate, we can help arrange flights to the US and Canada with the help of Air Angels
Share our Facebook posts and Instagram page in an effort to help find permanent homes for these rehabilitated, appreciative, healthy, 100% pure breed Mexican Mutts! Our page is at https://www.facebook.com/453921834673729
Through the help of some great volunteers, we now have a presence at the popular and historic Thursday Morning Tiangus in La Peñita. This is a great opportunity where we can take some of our healthy dogs and puppies that are ready and available for adoption and expose them to hundreds of people from near and far that pass thru this large, local market. And it's a great opportunity for people to learn about us and how they can help us help the local animals and youth.
We can always use volunteers to help us early Thursday mornings to load up and transport dogs down the hill to the market, set up and assist at the booth, help monitor the animals and then transport them back up to the Hilltop Refugio. If you are interested in volunteering, please message us.
It's always a wonderful experience to volunteer at our Spay & Neuter Clinics!
While working with the animals in recovery is a huge part of helping at the clinic, we have many other steps that volunteers can help with. Getting kennels ready for new arrivals, registering new arrivals and getting their weight (for anesthesia and pain meds), sitting with dogs while they are going "to sleep" awhile, getting more kennels cleaned and ready for animals that are waking up, etc. Recovery is always a busy station that is continually monitoring the animals heart rate, respiration and temperature. It's very easy to learn how to do any of work and we are more than happy to teach you!! Come join us.
